After a stellar performance on Monday vs. Superbad, the Alcoballics were looking to carry that momentum into Thursday's night game vs. NKOTB to seek their 2nd straight win. In what was suppose to be a fun, friendly rivalry ended up being a tense, close match with some questionable calls (or should I say "non-calls").
The Alcoballics were missing some key players, most notably Buchanan who has proven to be a consistent lead kicker and 1st baseman, but also saw some "new" faces for the first time this season. Would the newbies be able to step up in the absence of the veteran players??? Lauren "It's my bday Sept. 1st" lived up to her guaranteed promise of winning the girl chug-off and is now 2-0 on the season. E-Flo, step into my office. Why??? Because YOU'RE FIRED!!! Last season, it was the Alcoballics' offense (ranked 3rd) that was sputtering, this season it looks like the defense (ranked 16th) is struggling as NKOTB scored 3 runs in the 2nd inning and took an early lead.
The Alcoballics quickly rallied back in the 3rd inning in what was reminiscent of the time A-Rod slapped the ball out of Arroyo's hand in Game 5. Mike "A-Rod" was heading towards 2nd and was tagged out and may or may not have in the process kicked the ball out of the 2nd baseman's hand, which allowed a runner to score. The "don't be a douche" rule probably could have been used here, but unfortunately neither the refs nor myself saw the play and could not make the call. Five runs later, the Alcoballics saw themselves up and seemed to have control of the game.
Karma is funny sometimes, because as quickly as the Alcoballics took the lead, they gave it right back in the 4th inning. The Alcoballics fielded a questionable defensive lineup in what proved to be a costly decision as NKOTB scored 4 runs and never looked back.
MVPs of the night:
- Gorecki, after dropping a ball early in the game, bounced back and provided strong defensive plays at 3rd base (but you still throw like a girl)
- Bito's heads up play at 1st base, making a couple of double plays happen
- Jen Bryant's base running skills and slide into home plate (even though I think it was a bit much and unnecessary)
LVPs of the night:
- Adam and Pat as they both let a ball go down the 3rd baseline and literally watched it sit in between them as base runners were scoring
